Summary

A young Asian girl notices that her eyes look different from her peers'。 They have big, round eyes and long lashes。 She realizes that her eyes are like her mother’s, her grandmother's, and her little sister's。 They have eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea, crinkle into crescent moons, and are filled with stories of the past and hope for the future。

Drawing from the strength of these powerful women in her life, she recognizes her own beauty and discovers a path to self love and empowerment。

I wish this book was around when my sisters, who are adopted from Asian countries, were little。 I would’ve loved to curl up with them and read this book about their beautiful almond-shaped eyes。 I would’ve kissed their temples every time I read “eyes that kissed in the corner。” It would’ve made them giggle。 And maybe made them feel less different from the white people they lived around for most of their lives。 It was difficult to find books for children, in English, featuring Asian characters on I wish this book was around when my sisters, who are adopted from Asian countries, were little。 I would’ve loved to curl up with them and read this book about their beautiful almond-shaped eyes。 I would’ve kissed their temples every time I read “eyes that kissed in the corner。” It would’ve made them giggle。 And maybe made them feel less different from the white people they lived around for most of their lives。 It was difficult to find books for children, in English, featuring Asian characters only a decade plus ago。 I am thrilled to see this book and many others celebrating the diversity of the world around us。 Rate Procedure:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - I loved the book so much I would reread it again and would recommend to a friend。⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Thoroughly enjoyed the book, could not put it down, would recommend to a friend, but do not need to read again。⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Probably a good book that I enjoyed but there was something about it I did not love (e。g。 The writing style, the POV, etc。)。 I would only recommend to a friend if it was their "type" of book。⭐️⭐️ - A book I have below average feelings for and it would not come with a recommendation from me but I would mention it in conversation if related to the book topic at issue。⭐️ - I finished the book but I hated every second of it。 。。。more

I really wish I had this when I was younger, every young Asian kid deserves to have a book like this。 Honestly I got really close to crying while reading this because it means so much to see a picture book like this being published, thank you Joanna Ho。

A timely book, given all the hate crimes against Asians。 This is also great to teach kids not to pull at their eyes to mock their Asian classmates, as well as to give Asian kids pride in the shape of their eyes。Gorgeous illustrations as well。

My eyes cried big tears over this gorgeous book。 ❤️

This powerful story about loving yourself belongs in every home and classroom library。 The gorgeous illustrations and lovely, lyrical text completely captured my heart。 On almost every page, my daughter pointed to something in the illustrations and commented on its beauty。 But this story isn't only about physical beauty。 It's about strength and empowerment。 I highly recommend it! A sweet love letter to physical features passed down through the generations。

Beautiful story, photos, and authentic representation。 Would love to see an extended edition sometime including other girls whose eyes kiss at the corners, too, but have different abilities (disabled etc) and different family structures。 I’m saying this from the perspective of being an Ashkenazi adopted mom to my AAPI adopted daughter。 I loved this story and the way the author describes everyone’s beautiful and unique eyes。

Jocelin

A sweet book about self-esteem and how beauty can convey a story about heritage。

This book was advertised to me on my Instagram feed and I knew I had to get it。 A child in my class commented during a lesson on portraits that her eyes didn’t look like everyone else’s, and I realised I hadn’t even thought about how she would feel watching everyone else draw eyes different from her own - she is the only child of colour in my class and while proud of her Chinese heritage I know she sometimes feels alienated from others。 This book appeared on my feed a week later and the illustra This book was advertised to me on my Instagram feed and I knew I had to get it。 A child in my class commented during a lesson on portraits that her eyes didn’t look like everyone else’s, and I realised I hadn’t even thought about how she would feel watching everyone else draw eyes different from her own - she is the only child of colour in my class and while proud of her Chinese heritage I know she sometimes feels alienated from others。 This book appeared on my feed a week later and the illustrations and message blew me away。Her eyes are beautiful and she deserves to see them being represented in books and illustrations。 I’m hoping this story will help with that。 It’s a lovely story of family love and the illustrations by Dung Ho are things of beauty。 。。。more

So lovely in every way。 I wish I could get prints of every illustration。 My daughter’s eyes that kiss in the corners are like her dad’s and grandma’s。 I hope she’ll love this story when she’s older!

Wow! Gorgeous。 I hope every girl with eyes that kiss in the corners gets to experience this book。

When heavy things are happening in the world, we don't often think about how that affects children and who they'll be as they grow。 That's why #representationmatters 。Young people are watching us right now as these racial reckonings continue to take place and they're wondering if they're welcome here, they're wondering if they're allowed to be themselves, they're wondering if they're safe。And they're waiting for our response。I found this to be an absolutely adorable but also profound story of a When heavy things are happening in the world, we don't often think about how that affects children and who they'll be as they grow。 That's why #representationmatters 。Young people are watching us right now as these racial reckonings continue to take place and they're wondering if they're welcome here, they're wondering if they're allowed to be themselves, they're wondering if they're safe。And they're waiting for our response。I found this to be an absolutely adorable but also profound story of a beautiful Asian little girl learning to love and value herself and her family and their "Eyes That Kiss in the Corners" 。。。more

This is a beautiful book that draws attention to an important issue and also stresses that we all are fearfully and wonderfully made even though it sometimes does not feel that way when we compare ourselves to others。 I just felt that this book was a missed opportunity in terms of being able to delve deeper into the issues of diversity, self esteem, and friendship because it got lost in the lyricism and repetition of the poetry。 This picturebook is best suited to ages 4-6。

Both the writing and the illustrations in this are gorgeous (dreamy, beautiful, charming, I could go on)。

Wow! I absolutely LOVE the illustrations in this book! They are just gorgeous (and also the little sister is so cute。)I am really appreciating picture books that only feature one parent without indicating whether it's a single parent family or not。 I think it's great for readers who may not have a two-parent household。 I also love the many generations featured。 BUT of course the crowning glory of this book is in the beautiful eyes of the women。 They really do glow like warm tea :) I think the te Wow! There is a reference to a "revolution"—but what that is the author doesn't tell us and the reader must decide for herself。 That is the only element that I found confusing, but overall, just lovely! If you are looking for more books featuring Asian children, here are some of my favorites:- The Sound of Silence—a quiet book with beautiful text and uncommonly good prose。 Set in Tokyo。 One of the most artistically written / illustrated books I have ever read。- Ocean Meets Sky - Fantastical illustrations as a boy remembers (and dreams of) his beloved late grandfather on a "day good for sailing。"- Any Ling & Ting book - cute twins and how despite appearances they are not the same (other twins will sympathize!) - Where the Mountain Meets the Moon - Chapter book by the same author as Ling & Ting。 We read this aloud as a family and loved it! - A Big Mooncake for Little Star - we have wonderful memories celebrating the moon festival with neighbors; this picture book (again by Grace Lin!) is so sweet (although Little Star is quite naughty, parents be warned!) This is appropriate for very young children。- Angel Child, Dragon Child - a book I remember quite well from my childhood。 Features a child displaced during the Vietnamese war and her discomfort in her new surroundings。- Anything by Gyo Fujikawa! - another author/illustrator full of nostalgia for me。 I always give her books for baby showers。 Always。- Chirri & Chirra - there are a number in this series and they are all dream-like and charming。 I especially love the illustrations。- Illustrated Stories From China - We got this story collection from Usborne and have been enjoying it so much! Highly recommended as in introduction to Chinese fairy tales。 。。。more

Beautiful book about loving yourself。 the artwork is phenomenal

Beautiful picture book about not only the physical characteristics of the main character's eyes but the cultural heritage she has as well。 It's fairly short, so it would be appropriate for a PreK story time book。 Beautiful picture book about not only the physical characteristics of the main character's eyes but the cultural heritage she has as well。 It's fairly short, so it would be appropriate for a PreK story time book。 。。。more

Oh my, this is a beautiful book about self-love, confidence, family, and culture。 The illustrations are stunning!! "Eyes that kiss in the corners and glow like warm tea are a revolution。" Joanna Ho has written a powerful book for Asian-American children, and it may also help their friends (who might have "big, round eyes") see the beauty in each other。 Oh my, this is a beautiful book about self-love, confidence, family, and culture。 The illustrations are stunning!!
